Usually not unless you can prove that they purposely damaged your career causing you economic damage (since you are asking for money) and that it was widely spread. There is a difference between slander and libel with the latter being mostly about the media. People slander people all of the time and nothing can be done legally. However, if you are willing to pay a lawyer's hourly rate you can get one to file anything and also suck anything as it turns out. Probably don't have a case.

You can sue for slander only if you can prove that what the person has said has caused you actual damage (you lost your job, you've had to go to therapy, etc.); the person who said it intended to damage you, and the big one, it must be completely false and not something that would be in your nature. (Brittany & KFed sued because magazine said they were worried about sex tape. Judge ruled it was not detrimental b/c their careers are based on sexuality and the fact that they were concerned actually made them look better.)

If you do decide to sue someone and meet the above criteria please note that it is very important to verify that the person you are suing has assets. Even if you get a Judgment, if you cannot collect it, it really is not worth all the hassle.

If it personally ruins your life in some monetary way and you can prove it. Otherwise you are most likely wasting your time and money.
Anybody can sue anybody for anything the court will gladly take your court fee for fining someone. It is a different story if you will win or not.
If the Judge rules in your favor they still might not pay up and then you have to take them back to court for non payment.
