With all the hubub about global warming why haven't I been hearing anything about building new atomic energy plants? There are lots of them in Europe, France especially.

It's happening, quietly. Actually, it's "nuclear", not "atomic" plants. There's a difference.

I think I heard that the application & review process has been streamlined lately, so that the builders can bring a plant online several years sooner than they could before. And there are new designs on the books that make the plants safer to operate.

Now, when you see fusion plants come along, then maybe we'll be able to do something about global warming!

Nuclear power is easily the best option. I hate to say it because all the tree huggers somehow believe solar power can get it done but its just no practical. IF we could get a well built electric car with a 200 mile range or so thats affordable. And covert to primarily nuclear I think we got it made. We have a good bit of the ol yellowcake here in the US. No more foreign oil no more intervening in the politics of other countries on behalf of exxon. Nuclear isnt perfect but the death toll from Oil has been staggering!! We need to get a good nuclear waste storage or disposal system going!! That should be done first then build build build.

Yes, and there is a whole different set of issues that go with nuclear power generation. It depends on how much risk you are willing to take. After the Three Mile Island and Chernobly nuclear plant malfunctions/disasters, public sentiment turned decidedly against atomic power. It may very well swing back in favor now that we have proved how dirty and harmful coal-burning power plants are.
