the letter was to the social services thanking them but was published in the sunderland echo in 1976 in between may to september

You may be able to view archived copies at the British Library Newspaper Centre at Colindale (London NW9); otherwise it's a trip to Sunderland where, if you are lucky, they may hold copies somewhere there. I suggest you contact them first. Beware! Not all local papers are archived in the town where the paper circulated – our local paper has archives in another town 15 miles away!
