are actually not arguing with each other, but with a projection of their own "shadow selves" - the aspects of their own personality that they are simultaneously driven to, and afraid to, integrate into their sense of self?

OK, what I actually meant is that instead of really reading what their opponent says, they are talking to their own projected stereotype, and that stereotype is their shadow sel - the part of themselves they can't acceptf. In other words, the extreme liberals shadow swlf is a stereotypedl conservative, and the extreme conservative's shadow self is a stereotyped liberal.

Well... knowing what I do about Yahoo users, I wouldn't be quick to dismiss this idea. This digital environment allows people to delve into these "shadow selves" without fear of reprisal. Outside of this digital world, I'd be willing to bet that users suppress their extremism.
