The question - and it's a serious one - is why do you want to become a singer? And what do you mean by that?

Do you want to be able to sing well?
Or do you want become rich and famous?

They are very different paths, and you need to know what your real goal is before you start. If it's rich and famous, there may be better ways to get there than through singing.

If your goal is to sing well, then forget the American Idol route and start by listening to music and listening to singers. What music do you like? Listen to a range of different kinds of music - rock, pop, country, classical - listen to your own voice on a tape recorder and see what kind of sound you think you have. (You can't tell anything about your own voice without a tape recorder.)

If you're under 19, be patient. You can get some training in breath control and basic vocal production, but your voice is still in transition, and a good teacher will not do much with you until your voice has settled.

If you're over 19, you have another ten years until your voice matures, but you can certainly learn a great deal. A personal, well qualified teacher is the only reasonable answer. Your voice will be changing, and a teacher needs to be able to adjust exercises and approach depending on how you sing.

I sang for years as a tenor. Went to a good teacher (finally!) and he had me singing as a baritone for almost four years. One day he said - I think you may be a tenor after all. But until the voice had had a chance to develop, he could not tell.

Determine for yourself what exactly you want - then you will be better prepared to try for it.

Take some lessons. There is a lot more to singing than the average lay person could understand without proffesional instruction.
