Psychiatrist: MD specializing in psychiatry
Psychologist: PhD or PsyD in psychology
Nowadays, it's possible that clinical psychologists are prescribing medications. I've seen graduate programs offer coursework in psychopharmacology. I'm not so sure that this is the distinguishing factor anymore.
The main difference is really the focus... as medical doctors tend to look at biological factors that could contribute to mental illness. Clinical psychologists tend to focus more on the mind through various therapeutic techniques (psychoanalysis, gestalt therapy, etc.).
There are also other areas of psychology - e.g., social, developmental, cognitive - where many psychologists have devoted their careers to research.

well very simply to become a Psychiatrist you need to have completed a medical degree and then specialised in Psychiatry. Psychiatrists can prescribe medicine and Psychologists can't... they usually deal with the biological causes as well as the psychological causes of problems.
A psychologist has to get a Phd to practice (depending on which country you live in) and deals with the psychological issues, they cannot presribe medicine and might therefore consult with a psychiatrist if necessary.... hope thats simple

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor, while a psychologist is not. A psychiatrist is licensed to diagnose and treat medically-induced mental illness with medications, surgery and shock therapy. A psychologist may not use any of those therapy modalities.

Psychology deals with a whole range of subjects - from cognition and perception to development and neuroscience.
Psychiatry is a subsection of psychology that deals with neuroses, phobias and just day-to-day worry, usually by the process of Catharsis, although many psychiatrists employ a number of alternative methods.
