I've been practicing finger picking guitar style and after many hours I can only manage very basic tunes (and not very well at that). I get that thumb going ok but as soon as I change chord or add melody the whole thing falls apart. How long will it take before that thumb isolation thing will free me to play like Chet Atkins?

It will take you more than just "hours" to get this down. Some players practice for years and never master it. If it were easy, then Chet Atkins wouldn't have been considered a master.

Hang in there and keep practicing.

According to Tommy Emmanuel, you have to do it and do it and do it until your wife leaves you, the neighbors can't stand it anymore and finally, finally, finally...

You'll get it. (sort of)
