When you consider the speed of a baseball player, you have to consider more than just SB totals. Some players run better in the outfield than on the basepaths, and some are faster going from first to third than beating out an infield grounder.

The four people you've named are definitely in the running for the fastest. No pun intended. Here's a few names that you should also consider.

1) Joey Gathright is an absolute speed demon, and a great outfielder. He doesn't get the SB totals of the people that you named, but that's because he doesn't get on base as much. He's not as good of a hitter as Figgins or Reyes, but I would argue that he is just as fast.

2) Willy Travaras (sp?) can flat out fly. He garnered a lot of attention in his rookie season for the Astros, but his bat let him down a bit last year, and you can't show off your wheels if you're not on the track (or the basepaths in this instance).

3) I think that Ichiro might be the fastest player from home to first, but a lot of that can be attributed to his patented "out-of-the-box" hitting style. The only person who can possibly beat out an infield hit as well as Ichro is Reyes.

4) My "sleeper" in this group is David Eckstien. He plays so hard and gives 110% stealing bases, running out grounders, and going first to third. He doesn't carry the "burner" tag that Ichiro, Figgins, and Reyes have, but he can run very well.

Final rank:
1. Gathright
2. Reyes
3. Travaras
4. Ichiro
5. Figgins
6. Podsednick
7. Dave Roberts
8. Juan Pierre
9. Crawford
10. Carlos Gomez (minor leaguer who is the fastest on this list)

"Gathright, who has been clocked at 6.1 seconds in a 60-yard dash..."

It's actually Carlos Gomez who's in the Mets farm system beating Reyes in the 60.

With that said I couldn't find much statistical information to back up any of the other cadidtaes. Also to consider is the definition of speed. Do you mean in a 60 yard sprint or home to 1st or anything else you can imagine.

Players to consider: Willy Taveras, Garthright, Crawford, Ichiro, Jose Reyes, Juan Pierre, Chone Figgins

I don't think Podsednik is in the same class as those listed above.

jose reyes hit an inside the park homerun last september and went from home and back around the bases to home in 14.3 seconds. he is accepted by people who know anything about baseball as the fastest player. also the mets have a player chris gomez in their minor league system that is said to be faster than reyes. but for right now reyes is the fastest with juan pierre in second. and chone figgins sucks bty.

Reyes is very fast, but he's a good all-around player and therefore gets mentioned more often. Joey Gathright isn't a commonly known player due to undeveloped skills, but he has blazing speed. As noted in the link, he has run a 6.1 second 60-yd dash. It was rumored while he was still in the minors that if he developed as expected, he could force Baldelli to RF or even serve as a replacement to Crawford. Obviously he didn't, and was traded to the Royals.

Carl Crawford is probably the fastest out of the three you mention, he's so fast that he even stole home base last season against the Red Sox. A feat that is not commonly done in baseball. An inside the park homerun is more common than stealing home base.

Jose' Reyes Is so fast! Ichiro Is fast too. Ichiro had a better time to firstbase then Reyes but reyes can run fast for a really long distance

Although I love Ichiro I must disagree with him. I've read that he isn't even the fastest Mariner (to Willie Bloomquist I believe - no seriously:). A solution to Ichiro getting to first base fastest is the way he bats??? My guess would be that Carl Crawford is the fastest.

None of the above. The fastest player by far is OF Joey Gathright from KC. Gathright's best attribute is his amazing speed, making him arguably one of the fastest players in Major League Baseball. He has been clocked at 6.1 seconds in the 60-yard dash. He also jumped over a car in his youth.Topkin, Mark (2004).

The only problem.....he can't hit.
