Your question really says the same thing twice. You can only conceive when you are fertile, which is when you ovulate. They are one in the same.

You may only conceive once you have ovulated a fertile egg, which then makes it's way down the fallopian tube, and hopefully becomes fertilized and implants itself in the womb and begins to grow into an embryo and then a fetus.

I suppose the next question might be "when do I know I am ovulating?". Another subject entirely. From past experience (it took 14 months to conceive my daughter) the best method for determining ovulation is the temperature method, in which the female takes her temperature immediately upon waking, and records it on a graphical chart. As I recall, once the female's temperature spikes, ovulation has occurred, and you are essentially "fertile" for a 24-72+ hour period. Following that theory, if the female's temperature remains elevated, she has likely conceived. If the temperature on subsequent days falls back to what it averaged prior to ovulation, you likely did not conceive.

Of course, there are also the new-fangled ovulation test kits on the market, which I have no knowledge of and no experience with.

Your physician and or OB/GYN can help you further.

Good luck.

Sperm should be present in the body at the time of ovulation. (Sperm can live in the body for up to three days.) Once you ovulate, it takes approx 8-10 days for the fertilized egg to travel down the fallopian tubes into the uterus, and implant. Once it implants, you've conceived.

Generally most women ovulate about 14 days after their periods. This is when conception is most likely to take place. Not everyone does though, and it can vary widely depending on the person. The best way to tell is chart your basal body temperature and use an ovulation predictor kit.

when you're fertile it means that you're able to bare children. it is very likely that you will conceive during ovulation because that is when the egg is released from the ovum. you can also conceive when you're not ovulating, but its a very small chance you will.

Ovulation is when an egg (and, occasionally, more than one egg) is released from the ovary, and it's the fertile time of your menstrual cycle.
