I'm almost 40 and I've been a stay at home mom for 16 years. As my youngest gets older (8), I'm looking for something to do that I can make a little money, meet some people and not have to work long hours or holidays. I have 4 kids and want to be home for them after school and in the evenings. I also want to have a career of some sort. What do you think - am I too old to go to beauty school and work as a beautician? I didn't go to college and I don't want to go to college for the next 4 years.
Thanks

If you have the time to learn a new trait....then go for it. What you have to do is find a Applied technology or vocational college, school, or center that offers beauty courses. If you start now, you will be finished these courses and graduated within a year or less. You can look online to find these vocational centers near you. Good Luck

I am a Beauty Therapist (in Australia) and when I did my training there was a number of women who were around your age group with children. One lady even had 6 children and she still did her training.

The Beauty industry is a very flexible field to work in because you can easily be employed at a salon on a casual basis- only working during school hours, and only working a few days per week. When I completed my training it was 12 months Full Time training- Monday to Friday 8.30 am - 5.30 pm, which was good because it also gets you into the routine of working full time hours.

There are a lot of different levels of Beauty Therapy, so you could easily start at just becoming a Beautician and then eventually furthering your training to become a Beauty Therapist, Advanced Beauty Therapist, etc.

The great thing about this area also is that you can always perform services on friends and family at home, this way you can charge them a discounted price but you are still receiving all the money and you will be around for when your children get home from school.

Best wishes- it really is a wonderful field to work in!!

You're NEVER too old!!! I'm 30 and still don't know what I want to be when I grow up (lol). I have a job that I love, making more money than most people I know with degrees and I, sometimes, consider going to beauty school. I will probably be 40 before I actually do it. You can do anything you want to do, just believe in yourself!!! Good luck!

You aren't too old, but I don't think your lifestyle really allows it. If you have four kids then I think you should perhaps try another job, something that will allow you to work only part time. Being a beautician is a lot more difficult than you would think and it really isn't a career (anymore) that you do just to have something to do.

It's not that you're too old, it's that the times you want to be at home, are the same times that you're best paying customers want to come in.

My wife has a salon, and her best customers are working professional women (and a few men) and most of the time, they need/want to come in after work...she is often at work until 10:00 P.M. Stay at home Moms do come in earlier in the day time, but they also don't spend as much as they don't feel there is the need to spend the money to maintain their appearance.

you are never too old to do anything. college's do not have age limits on the people they accept. You may not want to take on a rookie job after you leave uni and work as a trainee for a salon but with your experience you could always start your own business from home when you complete your studies.

You are never too old to do something you really want to do. Do you really like styling hair? Keep in mind you will be doing little old ladies hair and also, young squirmy kid's hair. Have you considered being a manicurist? That may cost less money to train for and you wouldn't have to go to school as long - and you can sit down when you do your job also.

As long as you are fashionable and attractive you should have no problems! Remember Dolly Parton in Steel Magnolias? Who would you rather go to to get your hair done? Her, or the 18 year old at supercuts with all the style of a paper grocery sack?
You would probably be ahead of the game because people would assume you were experienced, but you would still now all the latest trends.

You are NEVER too old to learn something new! If you want to do it, believe in yourself and you can do anything. Don't let age stop you from being a beautician...or anything else!
