I suggest that you look at Google Scholar... all the articles are peer reviewed so are not just nonsense...it helped me when I was writing my honours thesis...

The problem with online sources (like wikipedia) is that there are no controls over them. The best thing to do, especially if you are researching a paper etc is to start at a university library. Academic journals are peer reviewed meaning the articles within have to pass some pretty stringent qualifications to be published. Also, schools with academic programs in this area will have the textbooks required for them in the university bookstores, or located online. However, here is a good place to start. Reputable sources will not be completely free online, but often you can get full text of archived issues. And you can subscribe to them.

Here's a start.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what you want. I believe they are also known as profilers. Many work more for the FBI rather than for the local police force, although I'm sure larger police forces have profilers. Quite often they work more on cases involving serial killers or other serious and violent crimes, more so than local petty crimes. I believe you can avoid being a standard, uniformed police officer. I would pursue that career if I were you, it sounds interesting and definitely helpful, although it is obviously sometimes disturbing and dark given the nature of the people who will come across.
