I know it as the farmer's moon circle (check out the farmers almanac) aka "halo around the moon", "ring around the moon". It's been linked to stormy weather ahead, like snow, rain and ice.

I know the night your talking about. It was because Saturn had aligned evenly with the moon. The rings of Saturn is what outlined the moon.

It's caused by the reflection of the moonlight off of a thin layer of clouds, it's said that it signifies bad weather is coming, but I like to believe it's a good thing ;)
