Roll-starting or bump-starting won't hurt anything if done properly. Always try to start in 2nd gear. Otherwise, you may lock up the drive wheels (compression lockup), and 1st puts too much strain on the drive train. Don't "pop" the clutch - ease it out quickly but smoothly. You want to get the engine spinning, but if it's jerky, you can break a drive shaft universal joint or CV joint, or even the dogteeth from inside the gearbox.

Is it bad? that depends.....
If you drop the clutch and it is in a gear (or rolling fast enough) that makes the engine spin very fast, it could hurt the bearings....
but not likely. You should only do it if you know the engine will run (i.e. it has been running in the past day or so). If it hasn't run for a long time, and you have a stuck valve, seized piston, etc, you could do more damage, instead of having something that could be fixed more easily. Most engines are designed to start at the starting motor cranking speed, and that is the best way to do it. Only pop start it if your battery is dead and you can't get a boost, or your starter is shot (but get it fixed soon!)

I would assume you need a starter or battery. I wouldn't do it all the time. To get out of a jamb, it's o.k. Bump starting, as it is also referred, can damage the clutch disc if done repeatedly. Remember the clutch disc is riveted together, and if your vehicle has good compression, this could, over time, weaken the disc. Also if you have an internal hydraulic clutch, it may cause leaking at the seals if also done in the sted of repairing a starter or battery.

P.s., Remember, most fuel injected cars need a minimum of 10 volts to run the vehicle. If your battery is stone cold, It may not work.

Well, of course, you don't start the transmission, but rather the engine. But anyway, no, it isn't hard to do. The hill doesn't even need to be particularly steep. A couple of people can easily push a car on a level street and get it going fast enough to staert by popping the clutch in first gear.
