I've been on bed rest for the past month because i went into premature labor at 31 weeks.
I'm 35 and 3 now.. and taking 20 mg of procardia every 6 hours to stop the contractions. I'm on a home-monitering system, and have about 1 contraction an hour on average. I've also been 3 cm dialated for the past month.
My doc told me to stop the medication at 36 weeks. Once i stop taking it, will the baby come quick after that? In my opinion, the procardia is the only thing stopping me from proceding into active labor.

Yes, your meds is the only thing keeping you from going into labor and being on bed rest. I guarantee you'll be in the hospital having your bundle of joy during your 36th week. 1 contraction and hour isn't bad. Once you get to 10 or less. You're close to giving birth. Meaning anywhere from 1 to 2 days. Depends... If you're like me you'll go through 20 hours lol. It was rough, but the baby is worth it. I congratulate you early and I'll tell you now. Take lots of pics. Good luck to you!

I know that it isn't for sure that you will go into active labor without meds. I too was treated for preterm labor at 30 weeks and now I am almost 36 and dialated to a 5! I was on meds to reduce contractions and I went into the hospital for a few days with contractions which brought me from a 3 to a 5...I'm still prego.
Your body will go into labor when its time. Its possible right after you get off the meds that you'll have a labor scare or even real labor. I personally have more then 6 contractions an hour, but my body is not in active labor. Once you do stop taking the procardia, keep on bedrest just to be safe! Good luck.

I also wonder if the procardia is the only thing holding labor back. im now 32 weeks.

generally you stop the medication because they want you on it for a short a period of time as possible since what you take the baby also takes, and that particular medication can result in fetal distress.

They will either put you back on it, or another form of medication if you go back into premature labor.

However, after the 36 week mark you are considered full term and the baby can be safely delivered, although most hospitals and doctors try to cross the 37 week mark if at all possible.

Just stay in close contact with your doctor.

Its unlikely that you'd go right into active labor after stopping the medication, although you're sure to be on bedrest to ensure that.

i would think so. if the medication is the only thing that is stopping you from going into labor, you should start up shortly after not taking it anymore.

That sounds like a fantastic question...for your doctor. Babies are delivered healthy rather frequently at 36 weeks, if that's your concern.

Yes, he probably will come very soon after. Just keep doing what you are doing and listen to your Dr. Everything should be just fine. Congrats on the upcoming arrival.
