I deliver pizzas for a living, and what the supervisor (the supervisor of my manager) wants to do this experiment. He wants to have a ton of drivers in the store so when a driver comes back from a delivery he or she would have to wait his or her turn, which would mean less $ per driver. He wants to do this so he would not have to hire anyone who wants to work inside only. The drivers would have to do the inside work when they are waiting.

Your boss is trying to save money for the company and give less money out for help. He's ripping ya'll off. But it is legal.

It is his business, he can run it however he feels it is most efficient. Why should he have to pay to have drivers sitting around waiting to deliver food if he can have a cross-trained staff that can do either counter work or deliveries? As a business person, that makes good sense. I assume if a driver is not on a delivery that he would be working in the store. Obviously the driver would still be paid an hourly rate even if he is not making a delivery.

To have people cross-trained means he/she won't get caught short handed when people leave or don't come to work. Smart business. And of course he/she doesn't want to pay people to sit around waiting for business to come in. Makes good sense to have drivers work inside duties when they are inside the store.

Better sense would be to pay sub contracter commissions and mileage, that way he can hire inside people and outside people. Not every inside worker knows your city do they?
