I enjoy both adaptions of Jesus Christ Superstar.
Carl Douglass was astounding as Judas in the 1973 film version. Josh Mostell was comical
as Herod Antipas.
Some people complained that the adaption of
that musical in the 1990's was anti-semetic
and bashed Christianity. To me it showed a Christ
who is human, and had fears and dreams like the rest of us. For God to be a human being he had to be in fear, be strong, be calm, be angry, be loved, be hated, be respected and despised.
Some people say that when Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber conceived of this opera it was to bestow the darkside of mass celebrity.
It also shows that no glory is every gained without
pain and suffering, as well as that undertaking
to bring genuing hope to people who are on the
brink of being broken down by life's worst does
not come without paying a high price.
Both actress who played Mary Magdeline brought
a soothing and loving grace to a part of someone
who loved a man who that woman know was doomed. I feel an empathy and love, and respect
for both of the actresses that played that role.

Oliver, Fiddler on the Roof, South Pacific, The Sound of Music and Carousel.
I haven't ever seen Jesus Christ Superstar. Hope I get to.
Evita is a good one too.
I like musicals that at least "sort of" have a plot or a message. Showboat (at least when I saw it) was too much glitz and not enough substance.

Some of my favorites are Cats, Annie get your gun, Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom of the Opera, Rent, and West Side Story.
Now, only some of these are operas, but these are most of my favorites. I am in love with broadway. Whenever I see a show, I come out exhilarated.

JCS is a good one, but the all time great musical was the original production of Hair...there was something about the era that can't be reproduced in a revival. I enjoyed La Cage Au Folles on stage, with the Erte costumes. Miss Saigon was a stunner...you can't beat a helicopter for a stage prop and the music was fabulous.

I actually liked 'Godspell' much more than I liked 'Jesus Christ Superstar' for 'religious reasons' as well as 'musical' ones. As for 'musicals' I LOVE 'Cats' and virtually all of the 'old' musicals from Oklahoma to My Fair Lady and Camelot. I have always 'liked' South Pacific, but didn't 'love it' until I saw it 'sung' (not 'performed') on stage with Reba McIntyre (sp?) as Nellie Forbush. I don't like 'opera' nearly as much, but I do think that some of them are 'just as musical' as JCS or any of the 'other musicals' I've named ... try 'The Flying Mouse' (Mozart) or 'The Student Prince' and 'go on from there' ...

Avenue Q. You can't lose with songs like, "Everybody is a little bit racist." It had a pretty good run on Broadway too.
Oooh...I liked the South Park Movie too. It wasn't a play, but it was a musical. You might be able to catch a live version of Cannibal! The Musical too. That one is hilarious as well.

"Wicked" is my favorite.
The original cast were the best so far. Yet, I hold that only to the great chemistry of Kristen Chenowith (Glinda) and Idina Menzel (Elphaba).
Also it has a huge lesbian undertone.....
