Yes, you can burn whatever you like in there. However, plastics should never be burned, as they will emit toxic vapors.

You have 3 things to worry about. Fire hazards (burning too fast, escaping the firebox either into the room or out the chimney), toxic smoke from chemicals burning, and creosote build up. If it were me, I'd never burn anything other than properly aged hardwoods (never pine). You could use a small bit of newspaper to help start your kindling, though.

you should only burn seasoned hard woods in your fire place! using newspaper and softwoods for starting are the only exception. any other stuff, like cardboard or paper and magazines will cause more than normal creosote build up in the chimney. that could lead to a chimney fire, and believe me, you don't want that!! they can get to over 2,000 degrees and ruin your chimney and cause a house fire. be safe, get the chimney cleaned once a year, before you start using it for the season. good luck, and be safe.

Depending how well constructed the fireplace is you should be able to burn anything. Some types of coal burn at 2000 degrees and these can be burned in a fireplace provided it's properly constructed.
