have them make valentines out of the foam stuff u can but at walmart (if u go to a craft store u will have a better selection)

make very large heart shaped cookies ahead of time and take some goodies for them to decorate the cookies with (1 each) if you use refrigerated sugar cookie dough it will make this very easy on you. some decorations you could use are

vanilla canned icing (tinted with some red food coloring)
cinnamon candies
fruit roll ups
gummie candies
heart shaped candy coated chocolates
colored sugars
sprinkles
rasins
licorice

these are just a few suggestions for decorations, use your imagination!

for their parents, have them each make a handprint valentine to take home.
use instant chocolate pudding made to the pie recipe and give each student a large sheet of colored construction paper which an adult has written something valentine related on with a marker... have each child put their hands into the pudding then onto the paper to leave prints-- then they get to lick their hands! lie flat to dry without stacking and send home with the kids at the end of the day (this is a very good opening activity for early in the day)

below is a cute poem i found to include on this project:

Dear Mom and Dad,

Sometimes I get discouraged
because I am so small
and sometimes leave my fingerprints
on furniture and walls.

But everyday I am growing --
I'll be all grown up someday --
and all those tiny handprints
will surely fade away.

So I am making a final set of handprints
just so you can recall
exactly how my fingers looked
when I was very small.

Love, (childs name)
Date

I hope you have fun!

Ok-make shoe box mailboxes for collecting the cards in (the kids can decorate a shoe box with paper, stickers, crayons). That will take up 15-20 minutes of time. Bring iced cupcakes with the decorations NOT on them yet. Let the children pick what to put on their cupcake (have no more than 4 selections, like red hots, sprinkles, conversation hearts, and colored sugar-other wise they will get bogged down on the process-and have them decorate in small groups over trays or paper plates, less mess). Serve a red fruit punch if they can manage cups well-some day care's are a little careful with the carpets and kids clothes. Buy a few inexpensive decorations and ask if you can slip in and set up for the party early so the party part of the day is super special. When you are talking about little kids, even simple low key decorations are a major event and mean a lot to them. If you can-have them do the cards at the end of the party or before they go home-any earlier and that is all they will focus on. If you want to do a take home item-buy small bags (holiday bags can be found most places or you can do a red lunch bag or even a ziploc bag) and put in your own items. Hershey kisses, get a big pack of holiday pencils, suckers, etc and make small bags for each child and the teachers. It is less cost to go that route than to buy premade candy bags. And with preschool you should have the advantage of a smaller class. Good luck and have fun with it!!! I must sign up for my son's day care class party at pick up tonight!

Valentines themed cupcakes... one for each child... Maybe a small pinata.. pin the tail on the donkey... get some grab bags... depending on how many kids there are you could go to the dollar store and get a bunch of different things for it, or you could use them as prizes for the games... games like: musical chairs, freeze tag ( if you have access to a gym..) duck duck goose.. and heads up - 7 up.....

have they made valentines boxes or bags for their cards??? they could do that before the party and at the party all the kids could walk around to each box and put a valentine in it...

how about a movie.. (like a 30 minute cartoon)... or maybe somekind of craft idea that they could make for their parents.. cut out construction paper hearts (large) and then cut out smaller one for the eyes and nose .. then cut stips of construction paper and bend them back and forth (kinda like an accordian) and glue those on for the legs and arms...

Cupcakes are a good idea. You could leave the decorating to the kids...frosting and candy hearts or cinnamon red hots. Door prizes of valentine related merchandise...or prenumber the kids seats, and draw numbers for the prizes.
