I will be taking ballet classes very soon, and at one time I was fairly flexible. The only thing my body had never been able to accomplish are splits. Just a regular split. Is there anything apersonc an do or any wesbites or such that can help a person learn or train their body into becoming more flexible in perfomring an old-fashioned split, or is this simply something a person was born with, e.g. being born double-jointed and the like...

THANKS!

what you have to do really is just see What you can do. Everyday you have to do the split going further and further down til you reach the groud. I would do the split for as long as you can. M friend does it for 10 mins so try that. It takes a little time but it can help you.

Good luck!

When I started my dance class I could not do a split too. Right now I can almost do a right split.
You've got to do some regular stretching before attempting splits. Do leg exercises such as plies and battements to warm up the leg muscles, especially at the underthigh parts. Then slowly lower yourself into a split and hold there for at least 5 minutes. Do it daily.

There isn't a trick to it, really. All you have to do is stretch every day. The key word here is every day. You probably know how to attempt a split, while supporting yourslef using your hands. You should do it every day, after a really good warmup. Another exersise that helps is sitting on the floor with your legs straight and reaching your toes with your hands. Repeat the same thing, but now put your legs as far apart as you can, reach in front of you. Reach let toe with both hands. Reach right toe. Do it every day, it will help.

P.S. I hope you mean "double-jointed" in a transitive sence. LOL. Every person has the same number of joints in their body. Although it is true that some people are more naturally flexible. You can achieve what they can achieve, but it will take you longer.

You have to strech! Don't expect to just be able to do the splits in one day! I used to not be able to do the splits, even when I was dancing 6-7 days a week.

I recomend sitting in a jazz split (one leg straight in front and the other leg bent behind you). Stretch to the leg in front, to the center, and lean to the back slowly and just a little bit (don't go to far or you rick tearing muscles and tendons). Then strech out your back leg, and push yourself as far down as you can go. Hold for 30 seconds. If you do this daily, you should be able to do the splits in a couple of weeks.

Also try working on extnesions, which are sort of a split. Pratice your kicks. A good strech is is to stand at a barre (or at home hold on to a sturdy chair or dresser) and bring your leg through passe and plie the leg you are standing on. Grab your arch and develope your leg, while holding your arch to pull the leg closer to you. Straighten the leg you are stanging on and pull you leg up higher and the the side (second posistion). Repeat. Then Work your leg to the back, same first part (passe, and plie) but grab your knee (fingers on the inside part). Keeping your knee bent carry your leg side and back. hold and then extend your leg, letting your back lean forward. Repeat.

This hurts like crazy but it works even if you're not all the way down in the splits, find a way to hold it without touching the ground. reach your hands forward and dont force your self against the splits. dont touch your legs, just lay forward on your front leg.

then sit up straight in the splits, put your hands on your hips, and arch back but still dont touch the ground. arching back will help you get your back hip down more.

then lay in the middle with your stomach on the ground and your arms reaching forward, once again dont fight against the splits.

breathing in through your nose, and out through your mouth will really help ease the pain in your muscles. not breathing tenses your muscles and makes them ache even more.

and for a even better stretch, try the parallel splits with the same directions as above.

if you don't know what the parallel splits are, they are the same as the regular splits, but flex your feet, and make sure you stay square

whats up, i'm also 15 and that i have been dancing for the reason that i change into 3, and that i will allow you to already know splits really isnt needed in a ballet enviorment (even even with the actuality that it ought to help). i did not have my splits until eventually i change into 11 and that i didnt even practice doing them, quicker or later I merely slid precise down into the splits! you actually might want to practice some easier ballet strikes as a change, because it is your firstclass, then once you get to type in August you may have a clue on what ballet words the instructor says. notwithstanding, in case you sense that you "ought to" understand the thanks to do the splits this can help. commence in a low deep living room. Then inch with assistance from inch get as on the fringe of the floor as you in all likelihood can. once you're so some distance as you could bypass, carry for roughly 5 minutes and then do the different area. do this regularly happening and with assistance from August you ought to have your splits or be fairly darn on the fringe of having them! good success :)

stretching out you're legs and hips really help. sit in second position and stretch from there, that helps to open you hips. side lunges will help too. after stretching, get into a split position and stay there for about half a minute and relax. stretching is the key. you need to keep stretching in order for you to open you hip bones. so stretch everyday and do the spilts as far as you can. you will start to see some results in a week or 2.

some people are born flexible some aren't but what you can do is ease your self little by little into a split and if you do it little by little
your muscles will "remember" and soon you will be able to do it.
Good luck and hope you enjoy ballet.

When I took Martial Arts we started the splits very gradually, holding the position as long as we could, day by day. Our splits widened slowly as we went, over time. It takes awhile.
