The front part of the cerebrum is generally known as the prefrontal cortex. It is responsible for much judgement and decision making -- higher order processes. This area of the brain is also thought to be involved in planning complex cognitive behaviours and in the expression of personality and appropriate social behaviour.

In the late 1800s/early 1900s it was thought that depression or 'melancholia' could be cured by frontal lobotomies, which involves non-selectively removing the prefrontal cortex.
The patients were indeed cured of their constant negative feelings, but also found themselves unable to feel happy. The prefrontal cortex is involved with decision making, but also has dramatic effects upon personality and self-regulation.
