Steve Vai actually played both sides of the guitar duel. Ry Cooder recorded the slide parts and produced the soundtrack.

SRV is not in this movie. Ry Cooder played all slide guitar throughout the movie and in the dueling scene. Steve Vai played his parts (of course) as well as the final classical shred piece that won the duel for the Karate Kid.

Steve Vai definately playeed the "devils advocate" so to speak. I have no idea who played, but I know for sure it wasn't Ralph Macchiano!
