Actually, it has less to do with the number of jobs available and more with how people look for work or recruit. People who look for blue-collar jobs tend to use the newspapers, and only when they actually NEED to find a new job. Someone who works in construction, for example, doesn't normally look for a new job unless they lose the one they have. Most of what you call "menial" jobs require little training, or the training is provided by the employer.

People who look for high-paying, technical jobs tend to send resumes to companies they would like to work for whether the company is hiring or not. The resume is kept on file and if a position becomes available the person gets a call. They then decide whether or not to take the position. Also, many highly technical positions are often filled by headhunters, professional recruiters who actually go out and find candidates. Many companies simply won't place a technical position in the general newspaper because they don't want to have to wallow through hundreds of applications from unqualified individuals.

The simple answer to this question is a matter of supply and demand. There is a HUGE demand for people who will work menial jobs because they usually don't pay well, and the hours and benefits are not very good as well. Also, the skill set needed for these jobs is very low - you don't need much schooling or experience to do them, so they advertise to the general public, hoping just to get somebody, anybody to respond! The better "white collar" jobs are less plentiful in the want ads because companies who are hiring for positions like these, are NOT just looking for anyone, they are looking for someone specifically in that expertise, with the knowledge and experience it takes to do that job. You'll most likely find jobs like this listed on websites such as Monster.com or Yahoo Jobs. Sometimes, they are not advertised at all, but recruits are sent into the field to find people to fill these jobs. My advice after all this? GO TO COLLEGE!! You'll increase your ability to find a white collar job significantly.

Technical jobs are generally advertised thru clearinghouses and by headhunters so you need to start visiting business websites that are in the field your interested in. There are lots of jobs for the skilled workers but you have to know where to look for them.

There are always more menial jobs available- but also, people quit those jobs more often. Some companies run their ads constantly to be ready when someone quits.

You are correct. It has gotten so bad that very few student are even going into computer science anymore. I know several people who during the downturn went into other lines of work after working in IT for up to 20 years because they couldn't find work. Write your congressmen and senators to cut the tax breaks for outsourcing and to not raise the H1B workers allowed in the US to take our jobs.
