I wouldn't run out to buy something simply because it won the Nobel prize, but the Nobel prize does help getting a book known to the wider public. You are right to say the award has become very political, but they don't give it to half-baked book. When something earns a Nobel prize, you can be pretty sure it's quality literature, whether you agree with the authors' conclusions or not.

Depends on the work. Would I run out and get a book just because of a Nobel Award? No. I have looked over the awards and seen books that interest me.

Nope. What influences me more is the book reviews and excerpts on National Public Radio. Since there are no bookstores within 30 miles of me, I have to special order my reading via Amazon or Barnes & Noble. No browsing. NPR and word of mouth is where I make my choices.

Now if the Nobel Award winner was featured on NPR, I might get it.
