Philosophy is the human capability and necessity to discover the meanings and workings of all things. Because of philosophy we have transformed the world into what it is. All sciences derived from philosophy. Today philosophy studies the essence of all human knowledge and also all things that have not yet been cataloged into an art or science.

Not all people who study philosophy are depressed. Most people study philosophy because they do not have satisfying answers for fundamental questions about their own life. Sometimes not having answers for these questions can make a person depressed. Other people are depressed even after philosophy because the philosophy they adopt, or come up with on their own, either gives them depressing answers for their questions, or still does not completely answer their questions. However, philosophy is usually not what causes the depression, if there is any. Philosophy gives people a framework by which they can find reasonable answers for their fundamental questions. Though in many cases one finds there are several possible answers and it is difficult to find which one is closer to the truth of the matter. In some cases, the search for the answer is more beneficial than the answer itself.

In philosophy we search for the truth, the aim is to understand, and yet as we search, our understanding can take us in a different direction, so we are ever searching, taking us on and on .
Philosophy is the study of everything that counts.

Logic:Whats valid, what's not valid

Ethics:Which actions are right.

Aesthetics: Beauty and art

Epistemology: Do we really know anything, if so, what?

Metaphysics: The search for, the understanding of.

And loads more. It covers a vast number of things too long to list.

The point is, to search for the truth, to know, and understand

If we understand our world and all that is in it, taking in the universe. We hopefully see how things fit together, how it all works.
Then there is the big one, the search for truth we cannot know, is there a God?
We can have faith, or not, but do we know, can we know?

It may help our world in the way we go about things. The way we reason.

As with other things, every now and then, philosophy gets shaken up and and tossed around a bit, and here we go again, searching for the truth we thought we had already found!

I am sorry I haven't answered your question fully, I could go on for hours.

Yes I know, you popped in the kitchen for a nightcap and we're still going on;-)
And that's what I'm going to do, get a mug of chocolate...

When we study philosophy, we demonstrate that we are able to acknowledge that there is something above and beyond the physical world. We are able to wonder what went before we existed (even the fact that we are able to realise that we had great, great grandparents is unique in the animal kingdom) and ponder about what might lie beyond this life.

We take this for granted as we all have this ability to varying degrees but it is this that sets us apart from the animals (when was the last time you saw a hamster contemplating its navel?) and is one of the major reasons why belief systems will never be eradicated.

The point of philosophy is to be able to form your own opinions on everything from politics to religion. If people don't form their own opinions on these things then we are all just sheep, doing and believing what we are told.

Philos is to love
sophos is wisdom
Without it we cannot detect or construct sturctures of understanding, we're doomed since we will have no way to develop a chritical awareness. I associate with the people who have a socratic way of learning, because I will start talking and expect others to carry on where I stop talking. I could mention loads of stuff about Greek Philosophers but that would be from a book.

Most people are convinced that we are here for a purpose but everyone is mystified about what that purpose is. I think that philosophy is attempting to understand what the point of everything is.

Philosophy is basically professional hairsplitting. It does change our world, but the pace is geological.

philosophy means "loving wisdom"...it is analytic science that tries to submit everything to justification and "not rationalization".

there is no certain point except for trying to understand different points of views..."how and why do you think so"...

it changes our world through affecting our behaviors...because the way you think is translated into actions later on.

it also helps you realize that everything in this life might not be just the way it seems to be..."meditation"

good luck
