How to host a wireless ad hoc network from a laptop and connect clients?

I can't get clients to connect on the network

I am using no router, but am sharing a wireless connection. It is an ad hoc network so I don't need server software and I am trying to form a computer network of about 4 or 5 people

You don't give us much. What router do you have? What server software are you using? How many clients are you trying to connect?
