We recently purchased a house and when we went to remove a door knob from one of the doors there was what we think is super glue over the screws. We want to replace the door knob because it has a lock on it and the room is meant for our 5 year old. We don't want her locking us out you know, heh...

How can we get rid of it? We've tried scraping it off with knives and screwdirivers but that hasnt helped much

To answer the question of what it looks like...it's white and crusty all around the area where the screw would be.

I doubt that it is super glue. What does it look like? What color, how thick? You usually can't see the super glue on a screw. I'm guessing it is Locktite or paint or regular glue.

The acetone is probably a good idea if it doesn't take the finish off of anything. It is extremely strong and will melt a lot of materials. It will take many paints off also. The fumes are quite bad for you and it can explode. Be carefull with it.

P.S. your description of white and crusty sounds more like a regular glue than superglue. Have you tried a little heat, like from a hair dryer to soften it? Be sure to use a screwdriver that fits the screw properly. You don't want to strip the slots in the screw's head. That is a common problem with stuck screws.

If the "Goof-Off" doesn't work, you will be required to remove the material it is stuck to.
