Poetry can be written by almost anyone. It can be short, long, humorous, tragic, sad, or filled with beauty. It ranges from good to very, very bad, but anyone can write poetry.

Now if the question was who can write poetry good enough to be published, that's a totally different answer. Not many.

well sometimes the beauty in poetry is in the eye of the beholder. some people go along with the notion that poetry has to be kept in strict forms - as in even free verse should be kept pretty close to iambic pentameter. iambic pentameter really is the basic pattern of speech... think about the things that you say. usually you will talk for about 10 syllables and then take a breath. look at my first sentence. when i read it out loud i take a breath after "poetry" - that was 10 syllables or beats. "is in the eye of the beholder" is nine more syllables - pretty darn close to ten. so maybe poetry is in every word that we say, in which case, yes, we are all poets in our own rite.

Judging from this site (Yahoo answers) absolutely NO ONE! Actually, people who can really write poetry, or any other creative endeavor in the writing area, do not post it on this site or ask for opinions from other posters. They are too far ahead of the others and would not waste their time here.

Anyone can write poetry.
They could be highly regarded people like Walt Whitman. Many people find his poetry quite deep and beautiful. Little do they know they're reading a gay mans fantasy stories.
Of course you don't have to be gay to write poetry, (though it does help) you could be into self mutilation if it tickled your fancy. ( mmm and what a tickle it is!)

Well anyone can write poetry. It doesn't have to be all rhyming phrases and such. It just has to be something from your heart that comes out. I'm a poet and sometimes my poems make no sense..

I love to write poetry.

This is a short poem I wrote a few years ago. It was published.

with charm,
I crawl but an inch.
with ability,
I walk to one corner.
with talent,
I run for a short time.
with effort,
I soar above the earth.
