intel's core 2 duo.

make sure your mother board supports Intel's socket 775 configuration for the processor. do not depend on integrated graphics, buy an external card as well.

Well this a very debatable subject.
I guess the dual cores are leaders. But, I waiting now on an order for my next Computer Build. I went with a Asus Motherboard Socket 939 and an AMD 64 +4000 Diego Processor 2.4 GB. The reason; It use the DDR Ram which I seem to find cheaper than the DDR2. And for what I want it will work great. I could not see the extra bucks for an overkill I will never use. The Motherboard was a GREAT Deal @ Directron.com (Open Box) so I bought it. It have the CrossFire Graphics, which was overkill for me as I not ever use it, but, for the price it was the best deal for the money, and one day "IF" I did want Dual Graphics it ready. ;-)
This Mobo will take the AMD Dual-Cores;

Everywhere else it $125. But, that sealed in the box price.
It say 4 GB RAM max. But, this may be debatable as the on-line manual have a story about that. But, I will probably only want 2 GB using 256 MB Rams to fill all my slots.
I wanted to add this, if, you a gamer this the board for a low cost;

Have a view window on the side of your case with some lights going. This the Mobo I would get and plug in a AMD Dual Core, max the ram with dual SLI Grapics. :-D
Both these boards DO NOT have on-board video so you do need a video card.
