I tried duct tape, it didn't work. The heat just melts away at the glue and it comes off again.

I recently had to cut a hole in my duct to do some cleaning. The best patch I came up with was using a piece of aluminum flashing (or similar material), and aluminum tape. This type of tape won't melt like duct tape does, and it's very easy to apply and seal. The flashing is just a thinner type of duct-like material, that usually comes in a roll..just ask at your local hardware store if you're unsure what it looks like. Good luck!

Why not try putting a piece of sheet metal over the tear. Use silicone calking as a gasket, screw the sheet metal over the hole and duct tape the whole thing.

You could save yourself a TON of money by fixing it yourself. I'm a fix-it-herself Mom and a good role of duct tape should do the trick. That's why they call it DUCT tape..........You should hurry before something builds a nest in there then accesses your home.................You go!!!!

don't use duct tape, seems you know that, use foil tape. it is an aluminum foil tape and it stay stuck on my boiler/ furnace exhaust flue pipe, so it will stick to your duct work. good luck, you'll find it a your local hardware store.
