Turner Broadcasting Systems and a marketing company have agreed to pay $2 million compensation and apologize for their advertising campaign that caused a widespread terrorism scare
$1 million will be used to reimburse the agencies and $1 million will be used to fund homeland security.
The signs also appeared in nine other U.S. cities but created little interest. Indeed I'll bet most were stolen by teenaged boys. Was it really "reasonable and appropriate for citizens and law enforcement officials" to go into a paranoid frenzy over a few signs? And is it "appropriate" to pay these people for ineptitude? These things are obviously no threat. And don't get me started on giving a million bucks to homeland security over this event.
Is it appropriate to charge two young guys with planting a "hoax device"? With disorderly conduct? What hoax? How could any reasonable person imagine the bizarre results of hanging these signs?

I completely agree. I'm sure there was some political decision behind the disproportionate response to these signs. They clearly posed no threat. We see billboards and other advertising devices every day along the roadside.

What probably annoyed the billboard owners is they weren't getting paid for the placement, and what drove the local authorities may have been the chance to 'show they were protecting the public'.

Either way, it's clearly a ridiculous response, and if I'd been Turner, I wouldn't have paid them a penny.

The thing that concerns me is that I live in a city that ignored these devices.

Terrorists carefully read the news about events like this in order to see if they can find an exploitable security hole. So now some AQ operative has noted that such a device in my city would be ignored until it went 'boom.'

Hindsight is 20-20. The police and prosecutor are acting properly based upon the situation that was created. If they had turned out to be explosive devices would you think it was the right thing to do to check them out? Certainly you would. And, you would applaud the police for nabbing the bombers.

Yes I am compare the germany of the 1920's and 1930's to the trends in todays American government. There is no middle ground just f***ing idiots on both sides who refuse any input not exactly like their own.

People saw boxes with wires and duct tape on them in various places around the city. They were clearly crude and during the day, not lit. They had no name on them or in anyway appeared like any typical ad campaign.

They were placed in areas that could easily be construed as "threatening". Places where one would put weapons that would effect the infrastructure of the city.

Then because obviously you aren't aware of it, we are at war. We are at war with a foe that has no qualms in killing thousands upon thousands of innocents. A foe who routinely kills men, women and children in bold daytime attacks, and they regularily use IEDS. They like to blow up planes, trains and automobiles. They like boom.

6 years ago this September, 4 planes were hijacked by said foes and flown into various targets killing approx 3000 American people. So, the days of ******* around with silly little lighted men boxes with wires sticking out of them on highway overpasses etc has ceased to exist.

Is that clear?

Turner "agreed" which means they willingly settled for this.
