I see many numbers on my computer, but can you also tell me how many numbers the serial number has and does it also have letters. This way I will know if I have the correct number. I need it to update my security.

There are so many variations! Most serial numbers
are usually on an identification plate attached to the
case, usually preceded by 's/n:' That may not be
sufficient to identify the system completely though.

If your PC is a brand name, this information is usually
stored permanently in the BIOS as well. Check there first.

Help in how to identify serial numbers and other
system information, is posted on the manufacturers
web site. Or their support team will advise via email.
Most manufacturers sites can also check this data for
you automatically when on-line.

If it's a computer that was put together, then you may not have a serial number, as the parts are all different. Each different component will have a seperate number on it, unless it's a proprietary motherboard (means that everything is attached to the main board, such as video card, sound card, etc.).

If it's a computer such as a "Dell" or "HP" then it will be on a silve metal tag, that says "serial number" on it.

Just right click My Computer and left click properties. Your serial number is under the Registered to: selection.

It depends on the manufacturer of your computer. You can always go the manufacturer's website. All the major computer companies show you where to find it in their help/technical support pages.
