I've bought the female already and she has been floating for 1/2 day in his aquarium. If this isn't a good idea, can I put her in my freshwater tank?
I'm only doing this for company for the male. My kids thought he looked lonely :^(

Thanks, everyone. I've removed her and she's floating in our community tank. I'll release her in 1/2 hour.
I did buy her from a fish store (specialty fish store) and got that advice from one of their employers. I'm glad I asked you all before I released her...
Thanks again.

False.
Male bettas are extremely territorial towards all other bettas, including females. Only during spawning will he tolerate her presence and even then, many females are injured.

However, female bettas do make lovely candidates for community tanks, as they are quite peaceful.

FYI, your male betta isn't lonely. He's probably proud that he's managed to chase away all the other (imaginary) male bettas in the area ;)

You should also move your female into a tank as soon as possible. She is running out of oxygen and clean water.

Betas are also known as fighting fish. They are solitary fish and so best on thier own. I don't suggest putting one in there. If you bought the fish from a pet store or a walmart, chances are that is a MALE. Most stores only stock males beacouse they are prettier than females, there for they sale. If you want a female you have to go through a fish dealer. If you like either one of the betas seperate them, or your kids will be watching a really bad nature show!
They come in a cup bythem selves for a reason. And no don't put it in w/ your other fish, the same thing will happen. Fighting

Just try to avoid putting in more female betta into your community tank. The females can get pretty rough with each other. Female tank are best started with at least 3 females all put into the tank together. Even then you can end up with female who simply can't get along. Adding more betta generally starts up the fighting over the pecking order again.

I've had bad luck keeping female betta's in community tanks. I swear they're more mean then the males.

i would go back to that employee and smack her in the back of her head for misinforming you,,,,
the only time you mix the two sexes of bettas is during mating season..
go online and read up on the fish before you buy another one..

You know I wouldnt risk it if I were you. I mean, betas are fighters. Besides its probobly not so much that its lonley but, that its proud to have its teritory to its self.
