Here're the basics about IDE controllers.

Most computers have two IDE controllers. They are essentially equal. Neither is the Master or the Slave. Either one can be used for the hard drive, the other for another appliance (such as a CD-DVD). Doesn't really matter which you use for what.

You also can attach more than one appliance to each of the IDE controllers, such as two hard drives or two CD drives.

If you attach two appliances to one IDE controller, you have to assign one of them as Master and one as Slave. Doesn't matter which is which as long as the jumper on one appliance is set as Master and the jumper on the other as Slave.

You also can set some appliances as CSL (cable select) and let the system decide if it is Master or Slave.

The simplest setup is to hook one hard drive to one of the IDE controllers and one CD-DVD drive to the other IDE controller. Each is a Master for that IDE controller. Just make sure the jumper on the appliance is set to Master.

It gets a bit more complicated when you install an additional appliance, like a second CD drive. Then you have to assign one of the two appliances on that controller as a Slave. You may end up "playing" with the hookups to get them correct, but it's pretty easy to do.

No issues, just any other device attached would be slave.
