Benjamin Franklin, nearly a hundred years before the civil war, started one of the first abolitionist groups in the Young United States. Before Lincoln's presidentency, there were dozens of groups. There were even violent ojectors to slavery like John Brown. Lincoln was considerate a moderate on the issue, willing to look at ways to slowly phase out slavery. There politicians of every stripe calling for a complete end to slavery. But perhaps the politician with sufficient clout besides Lincoln would have been Thaddeus Stevens.

Considering the founding fathers all owned slaves, i'd say that they were all hypocrites with a political agenda. They were comfortable with slavery and only brought it up since they wanted to use it as a grievance against Britain. Any other thinking person would have fought for the end of slavery!

Someone else in the Republican party would have abolished it. It was the democrats at that time who were pro-slavery and the Republicans were mostly abolitionists or wanted an end to slavery in the new states.
