Good question. Some have hypothesized that our universe was originally one in which effects preceded causes. Somewhere along the line the laws of physics brought about a "great reversal" and forced us to repeat everything that had ever happened.

A more likely theory, in my opinion, is that time is currently proceeding in a normal fashion (with causes leading to effects) but when the universe expands to a large enough size, gravity and the sheer size of the universe will overcome the forces that have been causing the universe to expand, and it will collapse back in on itself. At this point, some believe that everything that has ever happened will happen in reverse.
