This whine (not a squeal) just started happening (two nights of -16 temps) and the whine doesn't happen at idle. This Envoy has 109,000 miles, on-demand 4WD, 6 cyl engine with auto trans.

It's your alternator, or noise supression in the radio that's going out.

If the noise you hear is coming form the stereo speakers.

I'd whine too,in that weather.
Seriously however,if the noise goes away when it gets back to normal temps,I wouldn't worry too much.That is what's known as extreme conditions.Boy I don't miss that.I was in Cleveland during the cold winters of the late 70's.

I think it's your transmission. Might be caused because of your auto transmission fluid, which is rough when it's cold.
