In my opinion, we are here only briefly in the big scheme of things.
Very few of us (just being honest here) will be famous or have a major impact. BUT, many of us will do a lot of good, we might love well, or maybe be a great employer providing a livelihood for many. So "adding us up" can leave the world better.
As to what you do, I would say that your work should be something you have a PASSION about if at all possible. And don't be afraid to change! I've been a cowpoke on a cattle ranch, a tutor, a nuclear engineer, a college professor, had my own nationwide recognized company, and became a computer system engineer, all because I wanted to experience something different (I'm 56).
So yes, there are inevitabilitys, many we won't know about until we arrive there (does a seed know when it dies, and grows into a flower, how beautiful it will be???), so worrying about these futures situations can be frustrating. And if you take all the religions together, you might find NOTHING will match up perfectly!
So I say, do some good, be kind, help some others, ENJOY life, and do as many of your passions as you can. That might be the reason you're here...

We all question our purpose - & when we are bombarded with doomsday scenerios everytime we pick up a newspaper or turn on the tv, it's difficult to keep a level head. Each one of us has to discover within ourselves what we believe & then more importantly what we are going to do with those beliefs. While it's true there are many things we have no control over & cannot do anything whatsoever about, there are many things within our control, things we can make a difference with.....one person can't change the world, but one person can change their perspective of that world. We are supposed to do the best we can with what we have been given..we each have talents, strengths, characteristics that make us special. We are supposed to live each day of our lives trying to be the best person we can be. & Admitting our faults, asking forgiveness and trying to do better tomorrow than you did today. To live your life planning for eternity is really no different than going to work everyday & having part of your pay check put aside for retirement. Even though you could die tomorrow, you still plan for your retirement years, "Just in case". Life is the same way, living a respectable life, doing right by people, and finding true peace & happiness in the things that have real value. Doing so will provide you with a purposeful life, feelings of contentment & serenity, happiness & tranquility....here on earth.....as well as storing up treasures in heaven for your eternity. Concentrate on doing what you can do - being the best you can be - life is like being in school - everyday is another opportunity to learn - therefore, everyday provides you another chance to improve your "life's grade."

Accomplishments are determined by the person thinking about them. Do you want to be right? Or happy?
Do you want to foster peace or be a pain in the rear?
Have you done some random act of kindness today?
Can you go to sleep at night remembering the beneficial things you did and thought today?
What ARE we supposed to accomplish? All that I can do in one lifetime. One day at a time. One act at a time. Promote goodwill.
My kids/family/friends will hopefully benefit from my being on earth. And maybe you can too. Read the Bible-or the life manual as I like to call it. Instructions for living.
I believe in the Bible version of heaven and know that that is my eternal resting place.

The first human pair Adam and Eve were put on d earth to live serve Jehovah and be fruitful, fill the earth with children and live happily. However, the situation changed when Adam and Eve disobeyed Jehovah and thus lost their paradise home....However, Jehovah's purpose for the earth has not changed and he promises that he will soon transform the eart into a paradise by using his kingdom with Jesus Christ as its king.
Our purpose in life also has not changed which is to serve Jehovah...the most important way in which we can help ppl is by preaching the good news about Jehovah and his kingdom so that they may come to know Jehovah and conform to his principles in the Bible. In doing this we will help them gain everlasting life here on earth

You are not here so much to be tested (the above has the focus very wrong) but to glorify your Creator.
You were put here to glorify God. You do that by showing others that trusting Him is reasonable and logical . . . and safe. You glorify God by showing the world that God's word is reliable (unlike the above, who believes that it needs to be replaced) and valid for any human in any era, then, now, future.
But this is only possible with the Holy Spirit.

I believe there is an afterlife because it does me no harm to believe in it. Others feel very differently about this.
This is going to sound simplistic but it echoes your first responder's recommendations: do the right thing. Kindness, compassion, love all help us achieve happiness. If we act in these ways you are helping yourself and everyone else around you.
