I'm fairly certain that Madame President is correct for a female Head of State. I am confused as to the correct address of her spouse. What will we call the former President of the United States? How would we refer to him if he hadn't been President? A wife is First Lady, is the husband of a female President First Gentleman? I'm confused. Does anyone, really know?

(Accepting the hypothetical that Hillary wins...)

Bill Clinton would be addressed as Mr President unless he is performing official duties in his role as the husband of the President, in which case he would be refered to as the First Gentleman.

He will probably be referred to as Mr. Clinton or former President Clinton. Had he not been President he could be called first gentleman. Why not? The reason for the first two suggestions is it is customary to call one by his/her highest rank or the generic Mr. or Ms.

When two titles are both about the same the person who is to be called that title suggests their preferecne or depending on the circumstance. For example Dwight Eisenhower was President and was so called that but he also was a General and in certain instances actually preferred to be called General.

A retired president is always called president. If he had not been president it would probably be first gentleman.

First Gentleman is correct. Doesn't matter if he has been President or not.

he will always be President Clinton, but I think he should be referred to as First Gentleman. However, it's a moot point because I don't think she will be elected.

I would think, "First Gentleman", would be appropriate, but only under the circumstances.

How about we not elect Hillary, so we don't have to find out?
