My girlfriend has been in the US for about 7 years and we want to get married. Can anyone explain the process to me? I have no clue. She wants to go home to see her dad because he is going to die soon and we are trying to hurry. Is it possible for her to make it back real soon? Thanks to all.

First you go and get married. Once you are married you go to the Citizenship and Immigration Services website and fill out the forms.

Depending on what city you live in there will be a wait fo 3-12 months until you get your appointment for your interview.

If you are approved she should get her green card a few weeks after that.

Well, you go to a church or a courthouse and get married.

See, your problem is that your girlfriend has broken the laws for 7 years. By doing this even if you get married there can and will be major issues.

You get married - nothing complex. Now, if she's been living here ILLEGALLY, then she has to go back to her own country, and then you apply for a fiancee visa. When that's granted, she can come back here.

Of course, in that case, she's probably only interested in marrying you to get citizenship; which isn't actually automatic anymore, even if you marry a US citizen. You still have to apply, and can be turned down.

She doesn't automatically become a citizen when you marry her. If she is a resident alien or is applying to be a resident, marriage could even complicate the process since it changes her status. In any event, if she is already a resident, she could apply for citizenship with you as her sponsor once you two are already married.

As long as she is in the States you can marry her with no problem. After you marry, the long, arduous process of obtaining citizenship for her begins. After marriage it takes about a year to two years to get her green card. And she will have to stay in the country until she has her green card, otherwise they can refuse her re-entry into the country.

Good luck!

Just get married. If you are a U.S. citizen. The government
will check if you are really a couple or just trying to put one
pass them.

Ask for the normal American marriage papers. There should be specific choices regarding citizenship of your spouse. Your spouse's application for citizenship is optional, but keep in mind that it'll cost a few hundred dollars.
