Somebody PLEASE get rid of Gary Bettman.
The goalie nets do NOT need to be bigger. The NHL needs to do a better job promoting the game, not CHANGING it.

I wasn't a big fan of the new changes, but I accepted them. If they make the nets bigger then that will be ridiculous. I mean, the people on top of the NHL are loosing their faith and enjoyment in the game and only want to make a profit. Part of the greatness of hockey is making the great play and capitilizing on the other team's fault to score a goal. A bigger net will cause mroe trashy and boring goals. Also, even if there is more scoring in hockey, new fans will not be attracted. Hockey had its day in which plenty of goals were scored, but it wasn't a popular American sport then, just as it won't be now. The worst thing about having bigger nets is that all of the goalies will suffer. It's not just their stats, but their style of play. These goalies have been raised playing on the same sized net. They always know where they are, when the puck is going wide and how much room is behind them. If the nets get bigger, it will take a while for goalies to get accustomed to them, and some of today's great goalies will not get the recognition they deserve

It's not necessary. The NHL (in fact ALL sports) do not realize that what SEEM to be very small changes have VERY BIG consequences. In baseball, juice up the ball a little and suddenly home runs double. Change the height of the mound, and nobody will hit .300. In hockey we wanted to open the game up, so we changed the rules.......and now everyone is complaining the game is filled with penalties. The question is what do you want a goaltender's save percentage to be? For me .900 is just fine. And make it too big, you may get players feeling like they don't need to pass and stickhandle to get a good scoring opportunity.

It is probably worse than the idea to change the rules when the lockout happened. I for one am happy that the poll they took said that most peope DON'T want this rule to go through so i think it wont happen just for that reason. plus the games right now are high scoring enough without bigger goals. The NHL is starting to ruin the game of hockey just for ratings.

Why not just make the nets rink-wide, and use a soccer ball instead of a puck. Buttman is an idiot and just trying to completely change the game. I am on old time hockey fan, I like 2-1 games that are intense. Not friggin' 6-4 games that are sloppy. Now even the coaches are turning against all of Buttman's idiotic ideas. Keep the game the way it was.

It's a silly idea that does nothing to make the game better. The size of the goal is not the issue. It's nearly everything else that has a problem. Bettman is just using the size of the goal as a scapegoat to avoid fixing the issues that really need to be resolved.

It seems like Bettman has something against goaltenders. First the rule changes, and now the possibility of larger nets? I could at least watch games in the infamous "clutch and grab" era, but I can't watch games under these rules. Larger nets will only further keep me tuned out, and it shall remain that way until he (or, more likely, his successor, whoever and whenever that may be) creates some rule changes that actually help goaltenders.

Hockey has been in an downward spiral ever since the lockout.
This would be the nail in the coffin for pro hockey in my opinion. I doubt I have watched 10 games since the lockout. Hockey used to be a tough physical sport that required skill.

With this rule I might as well just go watch the Ice Capades. Pfft!

ok...to the first answer HUH??? and to answer your question i say that it's totally stupid....it makes the game easier and higher scoring..i think they are changing WAY to many of the rukes...soon hockey won't even be played on the ice anymore and well be using a ball instead of a puck...let us keep at least some things the same

laaaaaaaaaaaaame! There is a lot more scoring than there used to be already. Bettman (or should I say BUTTman) should just leave the game alone before it becomes something totally unrelated to the sport it was started as.
