It all depends what your preferences in travel are. I am sure some people enjoy cruises and resorts. its not my style. I prefer to split up my time camping and staying in hotels and really feel like I am experiencing the place. I used to live in Alaska. Everyone used to make fun of the cruise people all the time. When the ship is in town the town turns into Times Square, when it leaves it turns back into Alaska. If I am going to Alaska, I prefer to see Alaska. They same holds true for anywhere. Part of what is enjoyable for me is the unknown and figuring out stuff as i go. That doesnt mean you shouldnt plan a general outline, but I would leave plenty of time without plans or reservations for unexpected things to happen.

Montana is a great destination. Two National Parks and lots of outdoors stuff to do. For a one destination try sailing up the Inland Passage - start Vancover B.C. Canada and to Skagway or Haines.
