I don't have an opinion but I'm curious of yours.

No, I think a teacher earns respect of students and peers by being a great teacher, and it doesn't matter if they are male or female.

I think they are initially. They've got a deeper more stern-sounding voice than women do. It commands attention. However, once you get to know a person, you can change your opinion of them and therefore your respect level of them. If the male teacher doesn't deserve respect, kids aren't stupid. They won't respect him. The same can be said of female teachers. Initially though, I would say they definitely do, especially when the child comes from a home where a male presence isn't there.

I think most of the teaching is based on your own ability to demand respect. HOWEVER, I do believe there are certain students, especially from other cultures, that have a hard time accepting a woman as an authority figure.

For example, in the past I've had several run ins with Latino male students who have had problems taking directions from a woman, or admitting they were wrong when corrected by one.

Of course I've had plenty of Latinos who were absolutely respectful.

I don't think so. Respect from the students to the teachers has a lot to do with the confidence and knowledge that the teacher seems to have.

I suppose it depends on where the respect is coming from...male role modles are certainly needed on the elementary level while more females are needed in administration and in leadership positions.

However, quality education comes from both men and women and our schools need a healthy balance of both genders to ensure the success of all students in life.

Males usually come off more stern than female teachers before they let students see them more relaxed. I think they are.
