My youngest son was born at 36 weeks exactly last May and he was fine. I had the steroid shots too, and when he was born- his lungs were just fine.
Congrats on your new baby!

Most likely he will be just fine. I had the 2 steroid shots at 31 weeks as well, I delivered at 33 weeks. My son had to stay in NICU for 4 weeks, but it was because he hadn't figured out how to eat. Even at 33 weeks, he NEVER needed oxygen. His lungs were perfect. He also weighed 5lbs 4oz at 33 weeks. If your baby is born at 36 weeks, can eat on his own, breathe on his own, weighs at least 5lbs, and has no other issues, he will get to go straight home with you. Hospitals are different levels (1,2, and 3) as far as what they can handle. Level 3's have the high tech specialty NICU's. Most level 1's do not even have a NICU and will not deliver your baby (unless it's coming out at that second) unless you are 36 weeks. Once you are 36 weeks, no doctor will stop you. With prior problems, you are considered blessed to get to 36 weeks. Hang in there for a few more days, and I am sure at 36 weeks, the dr will take you off all restrictions and will tell you to call him when you go into labor! (36 weeks is also when you get booty privileges back if they were taken away!!!!!!!!!)

I had one friend who gave birth at 34 weeks and her baby didn't need to stay in the hospital any longer than a regular newborn. Another friend had her son at 32 weeks (low heart rate and they had to take him early by c-section). He had to stay in the hospital for a few weeks, but he is now a very robust 4 year old.
I think that your baby has a very good chance especially since you are very close to term and you have already had some steroid shots that help the lungs mature. Your baby may have to spend a short time in NICU, but barring any other complications, I'm sure there won't be any problems.

The odds are great that your baby would be just fine. On average, 95% of babies born at this time are breathing on their own. However, if you did give birth early and baby had to go to the NICU, it's not the end of the world and he'd only have to be there for a few days at the most.
Good luck and try to keep that little one inside for at least a couple more weeks!!!

Hello. My first daughter was born at 35 weeks. She was 5 pounds 13 ounces and healthy. I was in labor for 1 week before she was born and they tried to stop the labor - but it didn't work. I went into hardcore labor 3 times but nothing would happen. They did not give me any steroid shots because I was in labor - my body was giving the baby extra boosts of everything to help it develop its lungs, heart, etc. so I didn't need it. After she was born, she went into the neonatal unit but she didn't need any feeding tubes, IV's, etc. She was discharged after 4 days because the doctors didn't want her getting sick because she was healthy. You have probably had many ultrasounds and they would tell you if there was a problem. Besides, they consider full term 37 weeks so you are not far off. Good luck!

I went into labor at 33 weeks and they stopped it. They gave me those steriod shots also at 33 weeks and then again at 35 weeks when i went into labor again which they could not stop. I had my son via c-section (I had pre-eclampsia and was on procardia also plus he was breech) at 35 weeks. He weighed 4lbs, 15.6oz & was 17 inches long. He did not have no health problems at all and came home the same day as i did. It was a 3 day stay in the hospital.
I think you will do just as good as i did. Go to the doctor if you start hurting and don't rely on your water to break, mine didn't. It leaked and i did not even know it until they done an ultrasound and seen the fluid around my son was low. Hope everything goes well with you and congrats!

37 weeks is the point at which babies are considered "full term" and therefore safe to be born. Babies have been born as early as 33 weeks and allowed to go straight home from the hospital, but that's rare. Lung function and development is the main concern with preemies, especially in cold and flu season. Also, boys' lungs develop more slowly in utero than girls' do, so it's more likely that he'd need to stay in NICU than if he was a girl.
i know you're miserable and ready to have your baby, but waiting another week would definitely be safer!!!!
good luck to you!

your situation sounds very familiar to one of my friends. her daughter was born at 36 weeks and is a healthy and beautiful 8 month old! they did test the baby's lungs before she was born and were working on their own. the baby slept quite a bit and had a bit of a hard time eating at first but no major problems at all. good luck and hope everything goes well for you and your family! congratulations!

kay i don't mean to scare you or anything. i had my little boy at 35wks and 3days and he was sent to the nicu. he was sent there due to the fact that he didn't know how to eat. he was there for 2 weeks they said that if i would have waited until 36 wks i probually wouldn't have had that problem. But for everything else he was great he was the biggest baby in the nicu. he weight 7lbs 14oz and was 20 inches long. he is just fine now other then we could only get him to eat from a bottle so i really didn't get to breast feed. i did pump for 3 months so he had it.
