Stats wise the Gillingham 95/96 back 5 (Big Fat Jim Stannard, Dominic Naylor, Mark Harris, Tony Butler, Neil Smith) was great. 46 games, 20 goals conceeded, record in a league season of clean sheets. Conceeded at home on opening day and didn't conceed at home again untill January. Obviously not in the same level of football (league 2 as it is now), but much more fun than watching our current buch of flailing mugs.

Don't think so, though they were pretty effective. I think they were given a lot of protection by their midfield as well, which gives them slightly better stats than they deserve. Liverpools back 5 in the eighties were pretty good too - I presume we are talking England here, as pretty much any Milan or Juventus back 5 could run them pretty close!!

A great back five who rarely conceded more than a goal a game ,also the back five of man united in 1994 double season ; Schmiechel , parker, irwin, Bruce, pallister.
