Contrary to what some folks here are saying, bettas are NOT killing machines. They are territorial, but only with other bettas. They are just fine in community tanks with tetras, guppies, mollies, etc.
However, your tank is just too small for any other fish. It's perfect for a betta (make sure you heat the tank, though), but anything else will be too much.
If you want to add a tankmate, you could get:
One mystery snail, or
Two ghost shrimp, or
One african dwarf frog.

The tank is too small so it is better that you left the betta alone.
I have tried putting a betta along with other type fishes and the only time it has worked out was with a big tank (12gal) and the rest of the fishes were small.
Another time I put a betta with big goldfishes, things went well for like a month or maybe 2. Then I started seeing the betta nipping their tails.
I know it seems kinda sad having a fish all along, but in the case of the bettas that's better, specially if your tank holds only 4 gal, my tank holds 12.
Hope my stories can help you!

you can put other fish with betas, however only when the tank is large enough for them to stay away from each other. betas are very territorial and if in close quarters with other fish, they will nip at them (the nips make the other fish more suceptable to disease, and the other fish will eventually die). probably a algae eater or catfish would be the only things that would be ok, since they are bottom dwellers. however, i couldn't guarantee that.
if you want other fish, i'd recommend getting a bowl for your beta. otherwise, let your beta enjoy the 4 gal tank in peace.
another rule of thumb is 1" of fish per gallon (which gives your 4 inches of fish... 2 goldfish, or 3 tetras, etc.)

Betas can be in an aquarium with other community fish, just not other Betas. However in a 4 gallon tank, don't add anymore fish, it is a very small aquarium and the water will not stay healthy and balanced if you add many more fish.

some betas can live with other fish. do not put any other gouramis in there. they sometimes do fine with fantails and other goldfish and some kinds of tetras. 4 gallons is small so do not put 4 fish the size of a beta in there. betas do not mind living alone either so maybe just put some plants and decorations in there

At the pet store they will tell you that you can put some other fish with your beta. That is not true, i tried it and the beta killed everything. The fish were actually jumping out of the tank to get away from it. It even killed the snail.

The only fish a beta will tolerate are those with very short tales like little goldfish and other small tropicals. They may kill other fish depending on your beta's personality but I have successfully had other fish with mine. I had a very aggressive one that preferred to fight those little animals dangling from a glass bubble-you can get them at the pet shop-It may be a better choice

Betas need to be in a tank by themselves. They are
solitary fish. There are certain bowls you can buy to keep your Beta in and there are even plants that
will grow on top of the water to feed you Beta.
Ask the pet store.

with a beta you can't put anymore in they are very aggressive plus with the tank only 4 gallons putting another fish in there would be dangerous for the fish.
