Actually, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe was the first book written. C.S. Lewis did not write his books in chronological order of events.

One possibility is that Lewis wrote The Chronicles of Narnia in the following order:
1) The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe
2) Prince Caspian
3) The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
4) The Silver Chair
5) A Horse and His Boy
6) The Magician's Nephew
7) The Last Battle
The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe is the most commonly read or view story of the Chronicles. Similar to how The Hobbit is more commonly read than the full LOTR books.
Either of these are completely possible, since Disney is planning to release Prince Caspian in 2008.
And there has always been a debate why readers, teachers, researchers, etc as to what order they should be read in - chronological (to the Creation of Narnia) or in the order they were written. We read them in elementary school in the order they were written and later in my Senior High English Lit class, we read them chronologically.
My opinion is that they opted with the order they were written, since LWW is the most well known.
FYI: Chronological order is:
1) The Magician's Nephew
2) The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe
3) A Horse and His Boy
4) Prince Caspian
5) The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
6) The Silver Chair
7) The Last Battle
Hope this helps!

Maybe cos the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a good introduction to Narnia and to the adventures of narnia. It was also the first book written. And it means that you can look still forward to the Magicians Nephew being made into a film :-)
i love all the narnia books, and the magicians nephew is probably my favourite as well. its a great book and i love the 'in between' world where they jump into the ponds.

Probably because The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe is the story that is known by the most people. A lot of people haven't read the other books of Narnia and wouldn't have been as interested, therefore they wouldn't have made as much money.

That is true about the hobbit but the magicians nephew sucked and was kind of an add on to the series
