How does a company check to see if you have a criminal record and where do they check is it on the police computer or the court computer or an office which holds this data ?

You will be asked to complete a criminal disclosure form which is then submitted for checking with the Criminal Records Bureau. The result is then posted to you at your home address as well as your employer.

The Criminal Records Bureau has results from all criminal court cases in the UK.

Some companies will require you to pay for this check, whist others foot the bill themselves.

Criminal & DMV background checks are public record -- and there's 100s of companies can check your background for a HR department to select from. Any credit check has to be approved by you, and therefore it's not usually done (unless by your lender, if applying). So, its 'an office' to answer your specific question and done by your social security number. Pay your tickets, and make sure your driver's license isn't suspended.

They check with the Criminal record Bureau that holds information on the offenses you have committed.

They just go to the local Police station. You can get your own criminal record check to if you really want to. Just go and ask for it, and pay whatever the cost is....here it's like $31 or something like that.

They run your social security number through a database gathered from information from across the country. The background check will find everything, from local, to state to federal. The information is kept locally, but is in a nationwide database as well.

Any number of "Public Record" inquiries. Being that any legal matter, not sealed by Judicial Hearing, in the U.S. is public record they can go the court, DA, sherrif, police, etc and obtain that information or do it on any "online" inquiry service.
