Just take over the counter ones if you are not getting enough nutrients from food. Women have been having healthy babies for thousands of years without prenatal vitamins. I think that in this day and age, Dr's automatically suggest prenatal vitamins because most people just don't eat right.

The major nutrients you ned out of those prenatals are the iron, the calcium and the folic acid. If you can try to take them by themselves, and eat well otherwise, you will be all set. The prenatals actually have lower levels of vitamins than the one-a-days b/c some vitamins can have adverse effects on the fetus if taken in higher doses. So try to take just an iron supplement (to total about 30 mg a day- I think you can get 15mg tablets and take one in am and one in pm), and 80mg of folic acid per day. Usually it's either the taste of the vitamin coating or the iron that makes you sick (that was my problem), so take the doses in two parts during the day, with a good bellyful of starchy food or milk. That seems to help. As for the calcium, you can take a regular TUMS (calcium carbonate--exactly what's in your vitamin) with your meals, which will help with the nausea also. Ask your dr tomorrow if this would be the way to go. They won't tell you anything unless you ask a pointed question about it. They will try to get you to keep taking the prenatals, only because it packs a big punch in a little package, but if you can't keep it down it won't do you any good.

Just let your doctor know that the prenatal vitamins he prescribed to you are making you sick. Those vitamins are for you and baby to be healthy during pregnancy so you should definitely be taking them but they have a lot of different kinds out there. And I can tell you for sure that you're not the first to complain to your doctor about vitamins making you sick. I was the same way with my first son, I was never nauseous my whole pregnancy unless I took the prenatal vitamins that were prescribed to me, I couldn't them or any food down after I took it. I thought I was being weird and figured it was something everyone went through until I finally just got so sick of being sick and I asked my doctor about it, he told me that not all vitamins agree with everyone, he switched my vitamins and I never got sick again. I am now 18 weeks pregnant and thank god the first prenatal vitamins my doctor started me off with didn't make me sick at all, so this as been a nausea free pregnancy.

And don't listen to people when they say it's not the prenatal vitamins making you sick, those are the people that cause you to be sick your whole pregnancy for no reason .For me it didn't matter what I took them with or what time I took them, they literally made me throw up sooner ar later after taking them. Thats when I stopped taking them and realized I felt perfectly fine when I didn't take them at all. And thats when I told me doctor and he prescribed new vitamins.

The prenatal vitamins make many women sick. Try taking it with a full glass of water, try taking it with a small meal, try taking it at different times of the day. I took my vitamin right before I went to bed and I would drink a full glass of water with the vitamin and it didn't make me sick. Some people have better luck eating before hand, or taking it at lunch time rather than in the morning.... Regardless make sure you mention it to your doctor, maybe they can give you a different kind of vitamin that will be easier on your stomach. Good Luck and Congratulations:)

Are you sure it is the vitamins making you sick?? I've never heard of anyone getting sick from the prenatal vitamins, maybe your doctor can give you something else that won't make you sick. Good Luck with the baby!

I know you're feeling on that I had to start taking mine with milk and cereal and when i thought i would be getting sick i'd eat some crackers. I'm 13 wks. my doc. told me at the beginning as long as i'd get enough vits on my own there was no need for the prenatals til we got passed the major morning sickness part of it. Speak with him and see if he could give you something for neasua.

Mine used to give me really bad headaches. There is one called "Preg-vit" that comes in two pills. One you take in the AM the other in the PM. The combination of the minerals and vitamins can make you ill. This separates them and makes them easier for your body to handle. It really helped! Because it is prescribed by a doctor, it was considered a drug and my benefits covered it too (bonus)!

I had the same problem...I coulnt swallow, cause I would gag. And the chewables made me just as sick, as they tasted so gross. I ended up with Flinstones. Not exactly a prenatal, but at least its something.

Try to take it right before bed. That's what I did. Also, try a different brand, sometimes that helps. My prescription made me sick but the over-the-counter Target brand didn't.
