I have a 1996 Ford windstar that is fuel injected, last week when it got cold it wouldnt start, so we had it towed in to be repaired. The tow truck driver, and the mechanic both then told me when its super cold out to lightly step on the gas, less than half way, when starting it. My step dad is insisting that they have know clue what they are talking about because all I will do is flood it. Please help...for at least peace of mind!

I also have a die hard Gold battery that was installed in Nov. 2005, and when I took it in last week he put new plugs in. I just had an oil change done not long ago and they changed it to winter oil also.

your stepdad is right
but so are the mechanics

fuel injection means electronically
fuel gets shot into the cylinder head
without stepping on the gas.

so you should never pump the gas pedal
on a fuel injected vehicle because it will flood

but certain makes when they get older do have
certain things that will work better that when everything is new
and the mechanic and tow driver are probably
speaking from experience.

so they are probably b0th right.

Come on folks. Fuel injected engines use a computer to meter the fuel to the cylinders. Stepping on the throttle only opens the butterfly valve to allow more air and only more air into the intake manifold. The throttle position sensor sends a signal to the computer and the computer determines how much fuel to send to the engine based upon engine load (MAP), engine speed (CKP) and other sensors. If your IAP is plugged, then stepping on the gas might help.

Stepping on the gas to the floor sometimes works IF you are not getting fuel to the motor, but this will flood the engine, then you are really stuck as you will have to wait for the engine to unflood which sucks when it is cold. I have rarely seen this work. More likely than not, your battery is shot. Take the car to a local auto place and have the batterry tested in the car. It will tell if there are enough cold cranking amps to start your car when it's cold. Buy an Interstate Battery, very dependable coold weather battery.

I would suggest that you leave the accelerator pedal alone to start the car. If the car is having problems starting it is a sign that you may need a tune up or other repairs.
The e.c.m. determines, through various sensors, how much fuel and air is needed to start the vehicle and monitors the entire process. The e.c.m. knows what the temperature is, the position of the accelerator pedal, the speed at which the engine is cranking, etc. and will adjust (within reason) what needs to happen to start your car. Outside those parameters, the indication would be that you need someone qualified to diagnose the problem.

Fuel injection works in sync with an onboard computer which adjusts the mixture of air/fuel to obtain optimal combustion. So it really doesn't matter if you pump the gas pedal or not. All you might end up doing is flood the cylinders with Fuel.Check your batt, check the plugs. That should sort out the problem. :)

i trust tlworkpro often, different than he's not declaring all the choke gadget does on the motor motorized vehicle properly. Chokes artwork basically by potential of reality even as an engine is chilly they're in a position to coach all the help they're in a position to to initiate. What a choke does is closes off the incoming air from the filter out and makes the gas mix richer-more effective gas a lot less air. it really is what enables more effective uncomplicated putting out in chilly climate-a more suitable explosive gas source being dropped on the cylinder below the sparkplug. As you open the choke circuit more effective air is allowed to mix with the gas and the mixture will change into leaner. even as a choke is genuinely opened-ie no longer mandatory this is allowing all circuits interior the carb to be ready to artwork to complete potential-enable the mixture screw to do its interest, enable the jets to do their interest. volume of gas not in any respect differences, in uncomplicated words the volume of air being mixed with it, at any given throttle putting. Now all the above is predicated upon the carb operating top and all themes being equivalent. If some element is out of whack with any of the cables, jets, screws springs, spacers etc interior the carb then it impacts primary performance no keep in ideas what.

don't step on the gas I would run a bottle of fuel water remover through the tank It sound like you have a good battery so maybe your filter is holding some water and giving you problems

If it's fuel injected the computer controls the start up. Nothing you do with the throttle will make a difference.

Just turn the key. Nothing else helps.

Well, you can park your van indoors, and/or put a block heater on it which warms the oil and makes starting easier. Other than that, with a new battery, nothing else will matter.
