Why do people think that adding up the dates of events in history and generating single or double figure numbers suddenly makes them bad luck or significant. If you think about it people state the cases that 5,13, or 23 (first ones that spring to mind) are bad only state the facts that correspond to their belief of that number?

If people added numbers together of dates then I'm pretty positive that you could find dates that made numbers from 1 - 99.

Where did this numerology idea come from? Who was the first to decide that certain numbers are good or bad. I know that the number 13 is considered bad due to the last supper (or at least that's what I heard) but why other numbers? I've noticed the obsession arises everytime something significant happens like 9:11 or the 7/7 London bombings and the new Jim Carey movie 'The Number 23' that has also sparked new interest.

Does anyone have some other explanations and not just 'mumbo jumbo' based on adding dates together???

I'm not talking about maths. I know that maths works because we've all done that in school and know the sum of this and that make the other. I'm talking about how people add to together numbers to make patterns to prove that this or that is good or bad. Such as 9:11 and how people added together the date and the aeroplan number and the number of survivors... etc... until all the sums were the same number, say 25 (i dont know what number it is, it's just an example). Surely any date in history can be linked to another if you add enough numbers together.... I don't see how numerology works and if there has been any kind of proof that it works.

It's based on pattern recognition. For me, I had no concept of numbers or math except the basics. I'm good with a budget, horrible with algebra. So when I first saw the patterns in numbers it fascinated me. Anyone who has ever seen or discovered a number table might know what I mean. And it's obvious there are patterns of events surrounding specific numbers based on their place in nature...you know, like time and space. So for someone newly sensing these patterns they might tend to take it a step further...looking for even more meaning than there is. This is not to say there is NO basis for numerology. Just that most people draw excessive conclusions for it rather than just seeing it as another pattern. They just haven't figured out where this fits in within the scheme of things in their lives. Also, sometimes, if someone is surrounded by or obsessed with a number or numbers, it may be connected to strong memories such as trauma or extreme joy. Whenever I see the numbers in my son's birthdate, I think of him and his birth, for example. I hope this helps.

Actually in my opinion numerology is a very significant source of information, only if you can decipher the code. There are 26 letters in the alphabet, each letter represents a number. A=1, B=2, C=3... and so on..

My fiances initals are E.D., I met her at 5:04 p.m. on May, 4th. *5-4-2006). That's how I know me and "Eleanor" are meant for each other.

If you want to know about this numerology and signs thing, just let me know. :)

The current science has developed from different kinds of studies since the antiquity. We know astronomy because there was once astrology, we know chemistry and physics because there was once upon a time alquimism. All these strands were becoming pregressively considered as either scientific or pseudoscientific, partly depending on the empirical basis, partly in the political power of their developers.
Numerology actually has an empirical basis in some aspects, in others it cannot be proved, just as every scientifical discipline. Numbers do tell us somehing about Nature. For example, the Greeks calculated the magic proportions of a rectangle, which matched the "aurus number" and, certainly, give as the most harmonious proportions that human beings perceive, leading to appretiations of peace of mind and beauty. Also, the elements of the universe react according to repeated patterns that can be traslated to numbers and that give us a coherent view of Nature according to repetitions of numbers.
Finally, we do not know so much about the universe as to reject any of these pseudosciences, as well the not rejection of other disciplines before having enough evidence to test them, has permitted the progress of science and knowledge till the moment.

I suck at math, so anything that has the word Numbers in it. I stay away from.

edit.
I know your not talking about math, I know what numerology is,
But much like when studying astrology, you need a comprehention of astronomy. When doing numerology, you need a comprehention of math, which I do not have. So I stay away from it all together.

I think that people have always wanted to know the reason for things happening and they are willing to believe anything if they think there is an explanation for something.
